As of 1st October, Costa Coffee employees will receive a pay rise. The famous coffee chain is the latest corporate titan to jump on the minimum wage pay rise band wagon by adding extra sugar to its employees pay checks.

With over 20,000 employees, Costa Coffee joined its rival Starbucks and grocery retailers, Morrisons and Lidl to raise employees’ hourly paid wages. Costa Coffee baristas in the London area will earn a minimum wage of £8.20 an hour rising to over £9 and employees outside London will receive a minimum of £7.40 after the completion of training.

The coffee chain decided to be part of the pay rise squad, leaping ahead the official introduction of the National Living Wage that rose to £7.20 (aged over 25) from £6.50. Costa Coffee pay rise will apply to all employees including to those under 25 years old.

Costa Coffee’ managing director, Chris Rogers, told the Standard: “We strongly believe if people are making the same commitment to the business - they should receive the same pay. It should be linked with training and work, not age.”

A win-win situation all together, the pay rise initiative will not only benefit 1,500 employees in the capital, it will also generate more jobs. Rogers added Costa Coffee will be opening additional 150 new shops by February of next year, with 15% of these will be located in London.
