The Kumon centre in Bradley Stoke, Bristol celebrated 20 years of positive impact with a special ceremony.

The event took place on Saturday 2nd December at the Olympus Theatre on the WISE Campus in Stoke Gifford. The celebration took into account not only the events of 2018, but of the 20 years since the centre opened. The education franchise marked the occasion with cake and an extensive prize-giving ceremony, which saw more than 100 students accept awards for their achievements in Maths and English.

Sarah Nutchey joined Kumon in 1998 and has helped over 1,400 students improve their maths and English skills over the last two decades. Around 150 students, family members and supporters attended the event, as well as a number of alumni, who happily acknowledged the impact Kumon has had on their educational development.

Sam Head, who is now 22, described how he joined Kumon’s maths programme when he was in Year 5: “I achieved A*BB at A levels and went on to gain a 2:1 in computer games programming at Staffordshire University. I now work in my chosen field of computer games programming, which involves the use of 3D maths and physics.”

Rachel Knowles, who is now 27, explained that Kumon helped her to rise from the bottom GCSE maths set at school to one of the top: “As well as helping me achieve my school grades, it has helped me during my career. I am now a sales manager and still using the techniques I learnt from Kumon.”

The event represented a significant milestone in the Kumon franchise’s journey, and attendees were quick to praise it, with one parent commenting: “It was really quite spectacular to see so many children achieve awards. My son was over the moon to receive an award and we as parents are incredibly proud. I loved how it felt so grand and I could see a lot of preparation had gone into making it a success.”
