About Clara James Tutoring
Franchise

Join a $123billion industry

It was predicted that by the end of this year tutoring would be a $123billion worldwide business. With the curriculum getting harder and class sizes getting bigger more and more families were looking to tutors for support.

Then we had lock down. It quickly became evident that some parents didn’t have the time or patience to home school their child and they quickly sought the support of others. Others, maybe like yourself, found they loved it and wanted their new normal to be working with students, boosting both their confidence and their knowledge in maths and English.

Bespoke, 1 to 1 tuition

That’s exactly what we pride ourselves in doing here at Clara James Tutoring. Over the past four years we have been nominated three times as finalists for national awards, twice for customer service, then in 2019 for getting things done. Clara James Tutoring offers bespoke, 1 to 1 Maths and English tuition in the comfort of the child’s home or now, because of lockdown, on zoom.

We always use a range of resources as we recognise that everyone has a unique way of learning. If we do one thing, it creates a memory. Do that same thing twice and it makes that memory stronger. If you do a range of different activities, you are creating different places in the brain where it can find the information that it needs.

Many of the children we work with have some form of learning difficulty such as dyslexia, autism, ADHD. We are different from most tutoring businesses and I know we are not suitable for everyone.

Training and support provided

We are here to help you every step of the way.

As tutors we have always provided the support we have offered to our tutees. As a franchisee, we would strive to give you the same, amazing support. When you invest in a franchise you want to know that you will receive the support that you need. That is, to a large extent what you are paying the franchise fees for.

We know that everyone will be joining us from a different starting place. You may have an educational background and want help with starting and growing a business. Or you may have a corporate background or have run your own business in the past. However, education could be a whole new entity for you. Whatever your background is, the training will be adapted to suit you as an individual. We are here to help you every step of the way.

If you start from September onwards you will receive an intensive week of training in Aylesbury (your accommodation and food will be provided during this time). If you join us before this, we can offer you a VAT free starting point and the training will take place over 10 days on line.

Prior to this you will receive an introductory manual which will walk you through setting up your bank account, registering with relevant bodies, etc.

During the training program we would go through everything from marketing (Facebook ads, Google ads, Google My Business, neighbourhood cards to name but a few) and who you might want to market to. We will look at the process to go through when a family gets in touch. Meeting them and ensuring that you can give genuine help and support rather than coming across as a pushy salesperson. We will explore planning the lesson, creating resources, carrying out the lesson, receiving feedback and referrals and using this to grow your business.

After this you will receive a fortnightly phone call. We can use this time to get the answers to any questions that you may have and talk about the goals you have and any support you may need in implementing them.

In addition, you will receive:

  • Comprehensive training manuals will contain a lot of the answers you may seek.
  • The bimonthly printed newsletter
  • Between our fortnightly phone calls, you may come across other questions that you have. Feel free to drop us an email or a text at any time and we will ring you back as soon as possible.
  • Quarterly webinars.
  • In the summer months there will be a one -day event. This will be a fantastic opportunity to network and learn.
  • In the winter months we will have another networking and training day this will also combine with our annual awards. This will be a brilliant day and you are guaranteed to leave motivated and inspired for the coming year.
  • Our weekly franchisee’s club email will offer a range of useful information and ideas to grow your business.

The annual one to one meeting is key. This will be your opportunity to meet with us and set your personal targets for both your business and your personal life.

Something we pride ourselves in is the fact that one style doesn’t suit all. We will provide you with support in working with both dyslexic and children on the autism spectrum. We will also offer ideas and suggestions on working with children who have other learning difficulties. Though it is always important to that these children are also individuals and cannot be categorised by a label. Every child you work with will have their individual skills and preferences, the training we give you will help you to recognise these and respond to them.

For the last few years, I have been a member of the Entrepreneur’s Circle in Birmingham. A large part of the success we have achieved is because of the support we have received from them. Inorder to help you grow your business we provide you with 1 year’s paid membership to give your new business the best possible start in life.

The ideal Clara James Tutoring franchisee

Our ultimate goal is to become the number one tutoring organisation in the UK

(and if I’m being perfectly honest I’d have to say the world – but one step at a time!)

To achieve this, we are seeking franchisees who recognise that the most important underlying value is customer service and a mantra that asks:

What would the best tutor in the world do?

Becoming a franchisee is something you need to be passionate about. The business will become like another member of your family.
You will be someone special. You will be:

  • Empathetic, warm and encouraging.
  • Open to new ideas and adaptable.
  • Creative
  • You will have good qualifications and able to travel within your territory
  • Self-motivated and enjoy hard work
  • Entrepreneurial, determined to succeed and keen to generate income and profit
  • Organised
  • Customer focused
  • Keen to learn
  • A people person, able to listen as well as to talk.

Who you’re not!

  • Has a love of worksheets, stern and narrow minded.

Clara James Tutoring's history

Clara James Tutoring was set up in 2012.

The history of the business is a very personal one, and it is a personal service that we strive to provide going forward.

Prior to setting up Clara James Tutoring I had 12 years of experience working in a childcare and educational settings. My degree also reflected this.
When my oldest daughter, Clara started the juniors at primary school, I felt she might have dyslexic tendencies. I approached the school for help, and they dismissed the idea. I didn’t have the confidence back then to fight my argument so I decided that I would do as much as I could to help her myself.

Over the coming years I read, studied, and learned as much as I could to help her. Work took me into playgroups, creches, residential units for children with profound autism, mainstream schools, autism units attached to mainstream schools. One class I worked in had four children diagnosed with ADHD, the teacher was pulling her hair out. But I never felt inspired to become a teacher.

I took a role as an NVQ assessor but at the time my children were still young. Every day I was having to call their school and apologise that I was once again going to be late in collecting them. This was when I started a childminding business, to ensure I was always there for them when they needed me.
At that time, I lost my home during a divorce and the business died with it.

I took a job in a local optician to pay my bills. It didn’t take long to realise this would not be a life-time commitment. I returned to college to complete the PTLLS course. This meant I could teach adults in a classroom. Whilst there, a friend suggested I had a go at tutoring.

The more she described it, the more she sold the idea to me. Although I only intended it to be something that would subsidise my other job, get my brain working and give me some variation and creativity in life, it wouldn’t end up like that. Within 6 months, I had enough work to make it my fulltime commitment. Within 18 months I was needing help to support everyone that was getting in touch.

It took on a life of its own and it has continued to grow ever since. The business was built upon everything I had learned whilst working in such a variety of settings and through my degree. I also asked myself, what would I expect from a tutor if I was looking for one, for one of my own children?
In 2019, I decided to franchise the business. At that time, we were known as Starr Tutoring (Starr is my maiden name and something I was always very proud of). But when we tried to trade-mark the name it was contested.

We re-branded and became Clara James Tutoring. Clara is my oldest daughter., Jamie is my son. The logo is an angel holding a book. Angel is my youngest daughter. I hope that by keeping a personal name it reflects the personal service we offer. Every person that gets in touch is someone we can help. Every person is to be treated as if they are the most important person in your life at that moment of time. The person they are talking to is knowledgeable and cares. They want to do the absolute best they can for them.

So, that’s who we are. Where we come from and what has moulded us into the company that we are today.
