Barrow Eats is celebrating eight years since its original launch, reflecting on a journey that has transformed a single idea into a wide-reaching platform supporting independent food businesses across the UK and Ireland. The initiative, founded by Sam and Scott of the Eats Group, began with the objective of offering a fairer, community-focused alternative to national food delivery marketplaces.
A Platform Created for Local Impact
When Barrow Eats started in 2018, its aim was clear: to provide independent takeaways with a better way to reach customers, allow more revenue to remain within local economies, and champion small business growth. Over time, this concept has grown into a network of more than 100 Local Eats areas, establishing a strong foundation for independent hospitality.
Today, Barrow Eats works with over 100 local takeaways. Its platform has allowed restaurants and takeaways not only to maintain their independence but also to avoid the high commission fees typically associated with national platforms. Millions of pounds in commission have been saved and reinvested at the local level.
Tangible Results for Communities
The economic effect of Barrow Eats is significant. The platform now processes more than £1.2 million in orders every month, demonstrating the trust built among local customers and food businesses. Furthermore, Barrow Eats has contributed tens of thousands of pounds to local charities, sports teams, community clubs, and events, underlining its role at the heart of the communities it serves.
Local employment has also grown in tandem with the network’s expansion. As Barrow Eats has established itself in new areas, it has generated additional job opportunities, supporting economic resilience at the community level.
Community at the Core
A spokesperson for Barrow Eats reflected on the platform’s progress, stating, “Barrow Eats has shown what can happen when a community gets behind local businesses.” Every order processed through the platform not only supports local takeaway owners but also drives investment back into the area, reinforcing a cycle of growth and support within each participating community.
“A huge thank you to our restaurant partners, customers, staff and everyone who has supported Barrow Eats over the last 8 years. From one local area to more than 100 and counting, we’re only just getting started.”
As Barrow Eats celebrates this milestone, the team remains focused on expanding its network and continuing to prioritise local ownership, fair economics, and community spirit. The first eight years demonstrate what can be achieved when innovation puts local businesses and people at the centre of growth.
