Pizza Hut traces its history back to Wichita, Kansas in the US. It was established in 1958, when brothers Dan and Frank Carney borrowed $600 from their mum to open a pizza restaurant. It wasnt until 1973, however, that the Pizza Hut brand arrived in the UK, offering Brits a taste of its tasty, American pizzas.

Pizza Hut claims to have been at the forefront of many pizza trends that are now commonplace across the world. For example, it states that it brought deep pan pizzas to the UK and invented stuffed crust pizzas. These industry firsts have helped Pizza Hut become a household name in the UK, where it has launched more than 700 restaurant and delivery outlets.

Pizza Hut has more than 60 years of experience in the food and restaurant industries, which makes it a fantastic franchisor to guide business owners that are new to the sector. The companys franchise model is clearly rated highly by franchisees, as around 75 percent of the 13,000 Pizza Hut outlets currently in operation around the globe are owned and managed by franchisees.

Jens Hofma is the Chief Executive Officer of Pizza Huts UK division. He has held the post since November 2012, which he took up after spending time in senior roles with KFC Germany and Holland; Nestl SA; McKinsey & Company; McColls Retail Group; and Yum! Brands Inc.

When Hofma became Pizza Hut UKs CEO, he had been working for Yum! Brands Inc., the fast food brand that owns Pizza Hut, KFC and Taco Bell. Therefore, he was already familiar with Pizza Hut and the problems it was facing when he was brought into the leadership team to help steer the business back into profitability.

The CEOs Responsibilities

When Hofma arrived at Pizza Hut, he realised that some of the brands restaurants werent up to standard. For example, many werent clean and tidy, and showcased poor customer service. The new CEO also noted how the business went down a couple of blind alleys while trying to stay ahead of competitors in the pizza restaurant sector. These included a brief period when Pizza Hut remodelled its brand identity to appear more Italian, with darker dcor and typically Italian menu options.

However, Hofma managed to help Pizza Hut change direction by shutting down underperforming restaurants, replacing over a third of the restaurant managers and running refresher training courses for other employees.

In 2011, Pizza Hut underwent a change of management, when Yum! Brands sold the UK division of the business to the private equity group, Rutland Partners. This change proved valuable for the company, as Rutland immediately invested £20 million in it and pledged to donate an extra £40 million to refurbish a selection of Pizza Hut restaurants and run more training courses for its group of 10,000 employees.

Hofma takes a very hands-on approach to managing the business, putting in shifts at busy Pizza Hut branches to better understand the issues the business may be facing and to discover any smaller niggles experienced by the front of house staff. Hofma said, Its something I can easily do on my way home pop into a restaurant for three to four hours and go and wait on a number of tables.

He explained why he felt it was important to maintain regular contact with the business restaurants: Its very easy when you are running a largish organisation to lose a sense of reality. You are going from meeting to meeting and sometimes you pop into a restaurant and its a bit like a celebrity visit and you dont get a true picture of what its like.

In recent years, Pizza Hut has launched a relatively costly modernisation initiative that has enabled its restaurants to attract even more customers. Hofmas efforts have not gone unnoticed, as they have helped to bring Pizza Hut back into profitability. The statistics demonstrate this; according to the franchise, three million diners enjoy a meal in Pizza Hut outlets every month.

Pizza Hut Delivery Franchise

If youd like to join forces with Pizza Hut, theres good news. Pizza Huts delivery division operates a franchising model and welcomes keen entrepreneurs to help expand the business. It currently runs almost 350 outlets in England, Scotland and Wales, and intends to boost this figure to 700 in the coming years.

Pizza Hut Delivery was first introduced in 1988 and began franchising in 2001. Like Pizza Hut, Pizza Hut Delivery is owned by Yum! Brands, which owns a total of over 37,000 restaurants in more than 110 countries and has developed partnerships with more than one million associates.

At the moment, Pizza Hut is not taking franchising applications from prospective business owners as it is focusing on building the brand with its current partners. However, make sure you check back in the future, as this could change at any time.


Fireaway is an up and coming pizza franchise that was established in 2015. It provides its customers with fresh, authentic pizzas made in a fire oven. This traditional cooking technique enables the business to serve up pizzas in just 180 seconds.

If youre low on cash, the franchise also has a delivery service, Fireaway Express, which can be set up for a much lower price. This division uses local commercial kitchens to create delicious food that is sold through established delivery platforms such as Just Eat, UberEats and Deliveroo, as well as the Fireaway website.

This franchise understands that setting up a business can be a costly process, which is why it limits the fees its franchisees pay. On average, these fall at just £249 a month. When launching the business, however, youll need to have funds of at least £30,000. There is potential to make a healthy return on investment, as the franchise states that you could stand to see a return of £500,000 within the first two years if you follow the business model closely.
