Top 5 Milkshake Brands in the UK

Milkshakes were once thought of as a sweet treat for children. But with an increase in wacky flavour combinations, including adding alcohol, they have become a popular, Instagram-worthy beverage that can be bought from many trendy bars. There are also healthier, less sugary forms, which are often bought by parents and put in childrens lunch boxes.

The creamy, cold drink comes in a variety of forms. More expensive, luxurious milkshakes are often what we think of as a thick shake and comprise ice cream, milk and our chosen flavour. This could include Oreo, butterscotch, peanut butter, Kit Kat, digestives, Skittles, chocolate brownies, popcorn - anything that can be blended, really. There is room to be as creative as youd like.

For a cheaper, more basic version, some food outlets and producers simply add flavoured powder to milk and end up with a less calorie-heavy flavoured milk. Flavours for this version are usually more basic; for instance, chocolate, strawberry and banana.

Top 5 Milkshake Brands in the UK

Lets take a look at the top five milkshake brands in the UK at the moment. Youll probably recognise most of them from your local supermarkets shelves.

1. Yazoo

This flavoured milk brand is popular in the UK and has been for almost 30 years. It was actually the very first brand of its type to be retailed in the UK. For this reason, Yazoo is the original flavoured milk drink.

It is manufactured by the Dutch multinational dairy cooperative, Royal Friesland Campina N.V. The bottled drink comes in five flavours: chocolate, chocolate mint, strawberry, vanilla and banana, and originated in Belgium.

That being said, many children continue to drink the delicious drink into adulthood and so, in 2007, the bottle was redesigned to also appeal to the older customer.

Yazoo is a popular addition to lunchboxes in schools nationwide because every bottle is full to the brim with calcium and protein. In 2008, it got the gold star seal of approval from schools after it reduced the sugar and kept to natural flavours. It later went on to release a no added sugar range too, including a new flavour, toffee.

In 2015, the bottles were redesigned to have better grip and were completely recyclable.

You can find Yazoo in store or online from the following retailers: Morrisons, Tesco, Co-op, Ocado, Waitrose, Sainsburys and Asda.

2. Frijj

Frijj milkshakes are sold primarily in the UK and were initially launched in 1993 by Dairy Crest. In 2015, the British dairy products company sold Frijj and the rest of its milk business legacy to Mller for £80 million.

Frijj currently comes in seven delicious flavours: strawberry, banana, chocolate, cookie dough, fudge brownie, Irish coffee and zero added sugar chocolate.

3. Shaken Udder

This newer brand was established in 2004 as the brainchild of university friends Jodie and Howie. Shaken Udder milkshakes started off being sold at music festivals across the UK, but customers soon started to ask where they could buy them all year round.

The founders noticed there was a gap in the market for a milkshake brand that avoided E numbers and artificial ingredients. Jodie and Howie refused to rush into things and ensured they carefully considered every step of the process. They spent 18 months looking for a producer until they decided they would build their own dairy. In 2008, their hard work paid off and their milkshake launched in Harvey Nichols.

The brand gradually started to appear on more of our retailers shelves, including Waitrose, Booths, Selfridges and Harrods. And two years later, in 2011, Tesco launched Shaken Udders full range in 400 stores.

The company carried on introducing a few more flavours, including salted caramel and strawberries and clotted cream. And by 2018, you could find the milkshakes in Sainsburys, Boots and WHSmith, and on easyJet flights.

4. Moo Milk

Moo Milk was the UKs number one branded flavoured milk drink in the sharing sector in 2016. It comes in strawberry, banana, chocolate and chocolate fudge cake, and similar to some of the other brands, it is low in fat and has no artificial sweeteners or preservatives.

Moo Milk is owned by the Devon-based company, Crediton Dairy, one of the frontrunners in the UK dairy drink business.

These recipies have recently been altered to meet School Food Plan guidelines and have less than five percent added sugar.

5. Galaxy Smooth Chocolate Milk and Mars Milk

Galaxy is a brand of chocolate that was first manufactured in the UK in the 1960s. The brand markets a Galaxy-flavoured chocolate milk in a sports cap bottle. Galaxy is made and marketed by Mars, Incorporated, an American manufacturer of confectionary, amongst many other products.

Mars is a type of chocolate bar that was first manufactured in Slough, UK in 1932. It is also now produced by Mars, Incorporated. Like the Galaxy milkshake, Mars Milk is a chocolate and caramel milk drink based on the Mars chocolate bar flavour.
