Mark Coldham now runs The Massage Company High Wycombe alongside his wife, and he recently sat down with the franchise to chat about his journey so far.

When Mark and his new wife headed on their honeymoon, they enjoyed relaxing massages, and their minds began to buzz with possibility. They’d been wanting to embark on a new professional venture together for some time, and investing in a spa franchise suddenly seemed like a hugely lucrative, potentially perfect option. And it was! Since opening The Massage Company High Wycombe, Mark says they’ve enjoyed such regular demand that they’re already considering opening a second centre.

In his words, “My wife and I had been discussing starting our own business for a long time. We knew we could run a business really well, but didn’t really have industry experience or a product to get our teeth into. [...] We’d been on our honeymoon in India and had a massage every other day and it was fantastic. So we wondered if we could bring a massage therapist over to the UK and start our own business.”

Mark continued, “It looked difficult and we were tempted to scrap the idea, but then I saw an opportunity on a jobs board to become a franchisee with The Massage Company. Nobody else was doing membership-based massage in the UK, and The Massage Company was offering exactly what we needed. Every question I asked, they had an answer for. Everything I probed had been thought through, and there was a response and a reason why the brand does what it does.”

Mark was sold when they went for a discovery day and learned more details about how The Massage Company operates. He said, “The franchisors had already done the thinking on the product, the industry, on what massage is, what they can deliver, and how to do it well.” This was a huge benefit, heading into business. Plus, Mark and his wife “had a lot of help with finding the right property” and “really good support in building [the] centre exactly the way [they] wanted it”.

The Massage Company High Wycombe is “continuing on its growth curve,” and with “600 members already” is well on the way to profitability. Mark feels he’s been supported from the very beginning and at every step of the way by the network.
