Barking Mad has launched a new service that lends dogs to those who spend long periods of time alone.
The Knutsford branch of pet franchise Barking Mad has started offering isolated people the chance to look after a dog for a day. In this innovative pet-sitting service, freelance or retired workers get the company of a furry friend, while busy pet owners work or go on holiday.
Barking Mad is aware of the downsides of social isolation, which can include loneliness and the inability to switch off at the end of the working day. These are recognised issues; Amir Salihefendic, CEO of the remote company Doist, states:
“We need to acknowledge that isolation, anxiety and depression are significant problems when working remotely and we must figure out ways and systems to resolve these complex issues.”
Amanda Prentice, who works at Barking Mad Knutsford, described how the scheme can help:
“It’s like Bring Your Dog to Work Day in reverse! If you work from home, we can bring you a lovely, friendly dog to care for whilst their owner is away on holiday, subject to you meeting our host criteria. We take care of everything, included chauffeuring the dog to your home with all their essentials and providing 24/7 support.
“Caring for a friendly dog not only provides canine cuddles (far better than any virtual hug) but also the motivation to step away from your emails and go and take a walk at lunchtime.”
Those who take part in the scheme could experience higher levels of job satisfaction and morale, and even boost their mental health. The benefits of having a pet have been well documented, so this new service should have a positive impact on those who choose to get involved.
