Hotel Chocolat was founded by Angus Thirlwell and Peter Harris in 1988. They started out designing and selling mints first before moving to chocolates. After switching to catalogue-based selling, the company adopted the name Choc Express. In 2003, the name was again changed to Hotel Chocolat and the first retail store was launched in the centre of Watford. Today, the company has more than 70 stores in the UK.
