Wimpy Enjoy every moment

Wimpy is an iconic American brand and one of the original fast-food takeaways.

Fast-food restaurant, Wimpy, makes its comeback in Shrewsbury more than a decade after it originally set up shop.

Wimpy has reopened its doors in Shrewsbury, much to the delight of local residents, more than 10 years after closing its old premises. Previously located on Pride Hill and Shoplatch, the fast-food chain restaurant used to be a popular venue for casual dining and birthday parties. Despite being the UK’s first official hamburger restaurant with over 500 outlets in its heyday during the 70s, Wimpy was hit by tough competition in the form of McDonalds and Burger King. As a result, many Wimpy restaurants closed their doors including both locations in Shrewsbury and the number of outlets reduced to around 80.

However, thanks to franchisee, Ali Reza, the future for Wimpy in Shrewsbury is looking bright as it makes a firm comeback at its new 9 Claremont Street premises that can seat up to 100 people at a time.

Speaking at the grand opening on 5th April, Reza said the support had been overwhelming; “In the run-up to the opening I’ve had so many people coming in and telling me tales of how much they loved coming to Wimpy with their friends. Some of them had their birthday parties with us, some met their girlfriends and boyfriends here, which is wonderful.” He continued by expressing his hopes about the new store; “I hope that bringing Wimpy back to Shrewsbury will give everyone a chance to rekindle those memories and also make new ones as new generations of local families come and join us.”

It’s fair to say that the new Wimpy chain is in very good hands. Not only is Ali Reza experienced in the catering trade, his cousin is the proud owner of the Wimpy in Andover and Ali has spent time learning the ‘Wimpy way’ and is ready to make a big impression.

Wimpy UK’s general manager, Chris Woolfenden, expressed his delight at Ali joining the franchise team; “We are absolutely delighted to welcome Ali to the Wimpy family. With his experience in the restaurant trade he brings many skills to our team.”
