Subway puts healthy eating at its heart

Subway franchisee has won an award for a Healthy Eating Schools programme.

Daljit Nahil, owner of the Subway franchise unit in Coventry, won an Outstanding Community Partner Award at the annual Subway Leadership Conference in Orlando Florida at the beginning of March. Presented as part of Subway’s internal awards ceremony, the award recognised the Healthy Eating Schools programme that Nahil has been operating in his local area for 15 years.

The highly successful Healthy Eating Schools programme encourages primary school children to learn about nutrition and different food groups. It impacts thousands of pupils every year, and since its launch it has reached approximately 45,000 children across Coventry. It’s even become a key aspect of the curriculum in many schools.

Nahil’s work is an excellent example of franchisees engaging with and making a real difference in the local community, and it’s an act that Subway is always keen to celebrate.

As part of the scheme, children can create their own subs. This either takes place when visiting a local store or when a Subway franchisee visits the classroom. Creating their own subs encourages them to think about the ingredients that comprise their favourite foods and highlights the importance of having a balanced diet.

Nahil is one of Subway’s Business Development Agents (BDA). These have ample experience launching and developing Subway franchises, so they share their expertise and invaluable guidance with other new franchisees. They play a significant role in their site selection, leasing and operations.

As a BDA, Nahil has supported a number of other local franchise owners and encouraged them to also get involved with the Healthy Eating Schools initiative. There is now a network of 10 franchisees who visit nearby schools and meet with community groups like Scouts.

Nahil commented: “It’s great that Subway has recognised my Healthy Eating Schools programme and the impact that it has had, and continues to have, on the local community. Community is at the heart of Subway – all of the stores are owned and operated by entrepreneurs who are part of or want to contribute to their local economy, and I’m very proud to have been recognised as a part of that.”
