Subway locations in the US have joined forces with Feeding America to donate meals to vulnerable people.

The sandwich franchise has pledged to donate 15 million meals to food banks during the COVID-19 crisis. It’s launched a partnership with non-profit organisation Feeding America, which runs a network of over 200 food banks.

Usually, Feeding America gets food to more than 46 million vulnerable people through soup kitchens, shelters and other community initiatives. But now, the group thinks US food banks will need an extra $1.4 million in support across the next six months. This is largely a result of the growing number of people suffering as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak.

This shocking statistic has prompted Subway to make a difference. The franchise has promised to give Feeding America one meal for every footlong sub it sells before the end of April. Trevor Haynes, Subway’s North America President, explained:

“Subway has always been a part of the community to provide delicious subs and a helping hand – and we plan to continue to do just that during this time of hardship. From keeping our restaurants open and safe, to providing better-for-you food options, to our Franchise Owners dedicating their time and donating food, Subway is open to serve.

“And we are proud to once again partner with Feeding America to help make sure our neighbours are getting the nutritious meals they need and deserve.”

Claire Babineaux-Fontenot, Feeding America’s CEO thanked Subway for its contribution:

“Feeding America network food banks have seen an unprecedented increase in need for food assistance across the communities they serve. Subway’s donation of 15 million meals will help ease the burden felt by our neighbours struggling with hunger so they can instead focus on navigating this difficult time with their families.”
