Gym-goers were encouraged to stick to their New Year’s resolutions at Snap Fitness with a targeted workout class.

It is a well-known fact that few people manage to sustain their New Year’s resolutions. But research has shown that many people have abandoned their good intentions by just 12th January, a day which has now been dubbed “Quitters’ Day”.

Snap Fitness were keen to encourage their customers to stick to their ambitions for a healthier life, with specialised classes which they named “Don’t quit your fit”.

Building on the belief that reluctance to exercise stems from a perceived lack of free time, the session consisted of high intensity interval training (HIIT), which took up just 20 minutes of the participants’ day.

Manager of Snap Fitness, Adam Shumaker explained, "What we're trying to do is capture all those people and continue to encourage them by having them come out to the event and do a high intensity workout and interval training for 20 minutes.”

The class involved specific bodyweight exercises interspersed with periods of relaxation. Attendees were encouraged to wear athletic clothes and tennis shoes, and bring water and a mat if possible. At the end of the session, class members were given a Snap Fitness goodie bag and a free yoga mat as further incentive to continue exercising.

The fitness franchise aims to be inclusive and welcomed people of all fitness levels, as they do at all their gyms and events. They also suggested that participants brought friends along.

“Accountability is tough,” said Shumaker. “If you have one person that is there to remind you and help you and encourage you along - it's amazing.”

Other tips and tricks to maintain exercise motivation include keeping a record of your activity, using a personal trainer and taking selfies of your progress.

The sessions cost £10 per person and all the proceeds were donated to Bring Change to Mind, a non-profit organisation that works to break the stigma surrounding mental health issues.
