Metro Rod has urged people to think about what they’re putting down their drains.
As many people are staying in and using antibacterial wipes to clean their homes, the pressure on our drainage systems is growing. Not only are we using our toilets and sinks more frequently, but we’re flushing higher numbers of wipes and other cleaning products down our drains than we normally would. All these factors increase the likelihood of our drains becoming blocked.
Metro Rod has urged people not to flush anything other than loo roll down the toilet. Wet wipes, sanitary towels and toilet paper alternatives should always be put in the bin. Even ‘flushable’ wipes shouldn’t be dropped in the loo; although they appear to get flushed away, they don’t disintegrate fast enough to avoid blockages.
The drainage franchise has also encouraged people to avoid disposing of waste oils and fats in the sink. Whatever you do, they will solidify and contribute to giant ‘fatbergs’ clogging up your drains or the sewers, so you should always scrape food waste into the bin.
