Kumon is helping children across the US brush up on their maths and English skills amid fears of an international ‘COVID slide’ in education.
While some children might be thriving in their new home-school environment, many kids are struggling to learn with just their parents as teachers. That’s why tutoring franchise Kumon is offering free registration to students all across the US to try and combat a ‘COVID slide’ that will hinder learning during the next school year.
Many kids experience a ‘summer slide’, where they get out of the school day routine during the summer break. Considering that many pupils have now been away from school since March, some experts predict children could return in September with just 70% of their reading knowledge and 50% of their maths skills. The slide has also been observed as more severe in older students, which could hamper their chances as they look to enter the world of further study or work.
Kumon is keen to introduce structure and tried-and-tested learning programmes back into kids’ lives, so participating centres across the US will be waiving registration fees until 15th July. Its programmes are suitable for those that have just started school right up to those in high school. Whether students have fallen behind and need to catch up, or want to study more advance materials, Kumon’s programme is designed for all abilities.
Plenty of the franchise’s instructors have set up remote lessons to introduce students to their programmes. But as its methods rely on plenty of independent study, Kumon is a great solution for the new normal of socially distanced learning.
