Driver Hire took the chance to help out workers in the North of England at a jobs fair last week.

The fair, which aims to connect ‘employees’ with ‘employers’, took place on 27th February at the St John’s community rooms on Washington Street in Workington, Cumbria. It was officially opened by the Workington Town Mayor Councillor, Janet King, and welcomed people of all ages to take part.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Workington, in collaboration with Jobcentre Plus and Inspira, the jobs fair attracted around 25 businesses as varied as Centre Parcs and the Army Reserves. They were able to chat to attendees and offer advice about interview techniques and building a CV. This helpful service has proven so popular, it’s been revealed employers were on a waiting list to set up a stall at the event.

But the Driver Hire team secured their spot and were able to take the opportunity to network with potential employees and share their wisdom. Workington Job Centre’s Partnership Manager, Julie Routledge, said:

"It's a fabulous way of engaging directly. We encourage anyone to pop along and meet the employers face to face and make those links.”

Before the jobs fair, Routledge hoped it would pique the interest of locals wanting to further their career and learn more about their chosen sector. She explained how the annual event can offer a convenient professional development opportunity:

"It's a really good cross section of sectors that [have] jobs and opportunities in our area. We have done this in conjunction with Rotary and Inspira over a number of years and chosen a town centre location as it's much easier to get transport to.”
