The private health and social care sector is one of the fastest growing in the UK, and would-be franchisees will be pleased to know that there is an increasing number of excellent investment opportunities in the industry. Here, we take a look at how the home care sector is performing and then take an in-depth look at one of its biggest achievers Right at Home UK.

The care sector in the UK

It is estimated that the health and social care sector contributes approximately £46.2 billion to the economy every year and constitutes around 6% of the UK workforce. This is calculated as about 1.8 million jobs and, when compared to previous years, represents a big jump in both value added to the general economy and the number of individuals its capable of supporting.

The struggles faced by the NHS and the extent to which the health service is now willing to outsource certain parts of its operations has proven a catalyst for significant growth in the private sector. Placed under enormous financial pressures, the NHS has been unable to keep up with developments in the private sector and, as a result, more and more customers have to rely on private organisations to provide care.

This is one of the clearest explanations for the rapid growth in home care franchises over the last few years. While many of the major care franchises have been operating for a considerable amount of time, there are also many newer businesses that have been launched to meet higher demand. Right at Home is one such business.

Who is Right at Home?

Right at Home offer a wide range of care services to individuals with a diverse array of needs and requirements. Whether its senior care, specialist care, personal care, live in care, Alzheimers and dementia care, or simple companionship and support thats needed, Right at Home can provide it. The franchise operates to exceptionally high standards. It focuses on providing the best possible service by being selective in its hiring process, ensuring that its always open to communication with clients and their families and that all the necessary qualifications, accreditations, and licences have been acquired.

Right at Home also emphasises the fact that it's a flexible care provider that will do its utmost to ensure that it meets its' clients' needs. If a client or their family aren't happy with a particular caregiver, a new caregiver is found as quickly as possible. If a client or their family has any questions or problems, the business will make itself available and move to remedy any issues at as early a moment as it can. Right at Home recognises that customer service is key to success in the industry and works hard to ensure that clients and those close to them receive excellent service at all times.

A brief history of Right at Home

Established in the UK in 2010, Right at Home was born of the frustration its founder, Ken Deary, felt when trying to find a good care home for a member of his own family. Aware of the reputation Right at Home has in the US, where it has been in operation for more than 20 years, Deary decided to attempt to bring the reputable brand across the Atlantic, to UK shores.

After a great deal of preparation and having worked closely with the experienced franchising team in the US, Deary launched Right at Home in the UK, opening its first offices in Preston, Lancashire. By April 2010, the business was accredited and providing services to the local community. By 2011, Deary felt sufficiently prepared to begin searching for suitable franchisees that could take Right at Home all the way around the country.

What level of investment is required to become a franchisee?

Currently, would-be franchisees have to make a total investment of approximately £120,000. However, you can begin the franchising process with as little as £31,995 +VAT. This amount covers the franchise fees and initial start-up costs but does not include the working capital required to sustain the business through the first year of business. The franchise has established healthy working relationships with various financial institutions and investors should be able to borrow a considerable percentage of this initial investment should you need to.

What do you receive in return for your investment?

In return, franchisees have the right to utilise the Right at Home name, brand, and trademarks and receive an exclusive territory in which to operate. All franchisees enrol on a comprehensive training course that is considered one of the most respected in the industry. As franchisees occupy a managerial position, the vast majority of the training focuses on management and operations practices, rather than practical service provision.

The franchisor will also provide ample support and guidance in regards to setting up the business and acquiring the necessary licences. It has a great deal of experience ensuring that individual franchise units are prepared to meet the regulatory requirements of the industry and understand what it takes to get a business ready for trading.

The Right at Home franchising team will also provide long-term support and guidance, giving your franchise unit the best possible chance of growing into a large and highly successful business. This includes help hiring suitable staff, building a stellar reputation, and keeping on top of the latest regulations.

What kind of franchisee is Right at Home looking for?

Right at Home doesn't require applicants to have any previous experience in the care sector though some experience in a business management environment is useful. However, they do expect candidates to be dedicated to the company and to demonstrate ambition and drive. Franchisees will also need to be able communicators who are comfortable both working alone and as part of a large team. Finally, it's essential that franchisees bring with them a passion for compassion and a desire to provide high levels of care to those who need it most.
