The history of the Quiznos sandwich shop

Founded by Jimmy Lambatos and his partner Todd Disney, Quiznos first opened its doors in Denver, Colorado in 1978, under the name ‘Sandwich World’. It officially became Quiznos in 1981, and that first location was where the shop’s distinct oven-baked baguette-style sandwiches, unique recipes and tasty dressings were perfected. Also in 1981, Quiznos started franchising in the US. In the 80s and early 90s, franchising expanded to Canada, followed by an expansion to the UK (spearheaded by Quiznos Canada) in 2002.

Unfortunately, challenges started to arise for Quiznos and many restaurants had to be closed during the recession. In 2014, the company actually filed for bankruptcy, emerging from it about four months later. Since this time, Quiznos has been building its brand back up, working hard to expand once more, and increasingly catering to dietary requirements like veganism and vegetarianism as they become more common.

If you choose to franchise with the UK arm of Quiznos in 2022, you’ll benefit from a highly-experienced franchisor team that understands how to handle the ebbs and flows of business. You’ll know that in fair weather and challenging moments alike, your Quiznos team will be on hand to support you, doing whatever it can to help your sandwich shop succeed and thrive.

At Quiznos, our primary goal is to become the franchisor and employer of choice. We work together to achieve our goals, yet embrace our individual differences. What’s more, we know that we cannot achieve our goals without having a diverse assembly of team members, guests, franchises, affiliates, and partners.

Start a franchise in the sandwich sector with a Quiznos restaurant

If everything you’ve discovered so far about the highs and lows of Quiznos has left you increasingly keen to invest with this sandwich franchise, keep reading. The three questions below (and their corresponding answers) will tell you everything you need to know in order to make a fully informed franchise investment with Quiznos...

1. How do you go about starting your own Quiznos business?

You can register your interest in an investment and request more information via the Quiznos website’s dedicated franchising page. Note, before you do, that Quiznos doesn’t necessarily require its franchisees to have experience in the sandwich shop sector. Instead, they should be:

  • Entrepreneurial and business-minded
  • Diligent and hard-working
  • Driven to ensure their franchise is success
  • Committed to growing their Quiznos business over time
  • A natural leader and communicator
  • Committed to providing high-quality customer service/a great customer experience
  • Experienced in the field of restaurant management
  • Engaged with their community/the area where they plan to launch their franchise
  • Willing to follow Quiznos’s proven model

2. How much do you need to invest?

To become a Quiznos franchisee, you’ll need to make a minimum initial investment of £37,500, with franchise fees of £12,500. Your total investment cost will sit at around £150,000 to £190,000, factoring in other start-up and launch expenses. The actual, non-estimated cost of starting your own Quiznos franchise will depend on a number of factors, such as the size of the space you’ll be operating in, where the space is located and how much rent you’ll be paying on it.
