The UK’s devotion to health and fitness is illustrated by the fact that one in every seven people are now gym members. That amounts to over 9.7 million fitness members in the UK. In the 12 months leading up to March 2017, a total of 272 new public and private fitness facilities opened their doors in the UK. For many people there is nothing that quite compares with a smaller private gym, offering friendly and specialist services. This means that the private sector is enjoying strong growth.
Private gym operators are finding new niches in the fitness market, including offering boutique venues and lower cost access to equipment and advice. There are now around 500 budget clubs in the UK, holding strong with a 15% share and around 35% of private members. One of the most successful low cost club chains is Golds Gym, which is seeking new franchise partners for sites throughout the UK. Anytime Fitness also launched a campaign at the start of 2017 to find 70 new gym franchisees in the UK.
