Hillarys was established in 1971 by Tony Hillary. He started making blinds in a converted garage at his home in Nottingham. Originally, he sold only Venetian blinds and vertical blinds. In 1974, roller blinds were added to the range. In 1978, Hillary moved his shop to a factory and employed 100 people. Four shops were opened in Nottingham, Leicester, Workington, and Spennymoor. By 2000, 20,000 blinds were being produced weekly.
